Giro Seasonal Merino Wool Cap ($44.99) — or —
Pace “Cinelli” Reversible Wool Cap ($64.99)
Keep your noggin’ warm and prevent frostbitten earlobes with a toasty warm winter cycling cap. Unlike ski caps or other winter headwear, cycling caps are designed with minimal bulk, to fit comfortably under a bike helmet. They’ve got ear flaps that fold down to keep the wind off your ears and short brims protect your eyes without blocking visibility.
A perennial classic, the Giro Seasonal Merino Wool Cap is thin and stretchy, but still incredibly warm. It’s available in Black or Gray, in Small/Medium or Large/Extra Large sizes.
The Cinelli Reversible Wool Cap is new at our shop for 2017. It’s a little thicker than the Giro cap, with pleasing heft and a ribbed ear/neck flap. Because this cap is reversible, you can wear it two ways. On one side, it’s all stealthy black, and on the other side, it sports yellow, green and red stripes and a winged-C Cinelli logo to show your cycling style.
Count on Portland’s own Showers Pass to make cycling gear for the extremely wet conditions so common in the Northwest. Their ingenious Crosspoint Wool Crew Socks work for the same reason that sandwiches do… layers! Against your skin, a layer of warm, soft, and breathable merino wool. Over that, a waterproof, breathable Artex membrane. And over that, a wear-resistant knit exterior that feels like a regular sock.
Crosspoint Wool socks really work, keeping out water, wicking away sweat, and banishing the winter cold. But don’t just take our word for it, watch this video to see what real-life cyclists and runners have to say:
We’ve got the Crosspoint Wool Socks in four sizes, and every color you want so long as it’s grey.
While it wasn’t so long ago that 350 lumens meant you had a “fancy” bike light, costing you several hundreds of dollars, today this powerful light output is available at a more modest price, making bright light technology available to the masses. The Blackburn Central 350 Micro/Click USB Light Set is one of the best value light sets available for bike commuting. Its front light, the Central 350 Micro, packs a whopping 350 lumens of power into a pocket size package, with a sturdy aluminum body that is fully sealed against the elements. Its rear light, the Click USB, provides 20 lumens of red light, with excellent side visibility to keep you safe in traffic. Both lights are USB rechargeable, meet ANSI FL-1 Standards for consistent performance measurements, and meet IP67 standards for dustproof and waterproof construction. And all Blackburn bike lights have a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects, so you can trust them to keep working year after year.
SP Connect Bike Bundle Universal Phone Mounting System ($29.99) — or —
SP Connect Universal Smartphone Interface ($19.99) — & —
SP Connect Smartphone Handlebar Mount ($39.99)
Smartphones are great for cycling directions, especially in the city, but how will you know where you’re going if you can’t see the screen? There are lots of systems out there for mounting your smartphone to your bike, but the most convenient, modular option we’ve found is made by SP Connect.
The SP Connect system is based on their universal smartphone interface, which adheres to the smartphone or case of your choice using an ultra-strong 3M adhesive pad. Once the Universal Smartphone Interface is attached to your phone or case, you can connect it to a wide array of SP Connect bike, motorcycle, car, and wearable phone mounts.
For bicycle handlebar or headset top cap mounting, purchase the SP Connect Bike Bundle Universal Phone Mounting System, which includes the Universal Smartphone Interface, a flexible clamp-style handlebar mount, and a headset top cap mount. Or, for “out front” mounting in front of your handlebars, purchase the SP Connect Universal Smartphone Interface and the SP Connect Smartphone Handlebar Mount separately.
Carradice Keswick Handlebar Bag ($114.99)
Bigger than a saddle bag, smaller than a pannier, the humble handlebar bag is a versatile option for carrying anything you’ll need by bike. Commuting? Pack your wallet, phone, keys, and lunch. Touring? Pack a camera, granola bars, and a map. Epic road ride? Pack energy gels, a repair kit, spare tubes, and CO2 cartridges.
The Carradice Keswick Handlebar Bag will fit most any bike handlebar, using a quick release Rixen and Kaul KLICKfix handlebar bracket that won’t rotate, loosen or break no matter how heavily you load it. It’s handmade in Nelson, English from 100% waterproof waxed cotton duck, with a rigid internal support case, a large external front pocket, 2 internal organizer sections, and a zipped internal pocket. Details like a shoulder strap, detachable light mounting bracket on the underside of the bag, and a waterproof map case incorporated into the lid make this a practical, well-thought out bag for any kind of ride.
We carry the Keswick Handlebar Bag in Forest Green with Honey Brown leather straps, a traditional English color scheme that looks as good in Prospect Park, Brooklyn as it does in Richmond Park, London.
