Joe
Joe Lawler is the Owner and Service Manager of Bicycle Roots. A third generation New Yorker, he was was born and raised in Hell's Kitchen with roots in Bensonhurts, Brooklyn. Having grown up close to Central Park, cycling in the city has been a part of Joe's life for as long as he can remember. In 2001 Joe started interning at Recycle-A-Bicycle in DUMBO, Brooklyn. He became a junior mechanic and taught repair nights, and then went on to become the Head Mechanic and Assistant Manager at Recycle-A-Bicycle's East Village location. In 2007 Joe started as a junior mechanic at Sid's Bikes in midtown Manhattan, ultimately becoming the Head Mechanic and Service Manager at their 34th Street location. Sid's gave Joe a chance to branch out into the local racing community, as well as hone his professional skills. In 2012, Joe left Sid's to work at Bicycle Roots in Bed-Stuy. When Bicycle Roots relocated to Crown Heights, Joe became a partner in the business. An avid cyclocross racer, Joe holds the title of Tandem Cyclocross Werld Shampion. Joe has a reputation as the best pro wrench in New York City and many of the city's most demanding bicycle riders will trust their bike repairs to no one but him.
Nogga
Nogga has been with Bicycle Roots since 2016. He's our sales manager who will go above and beyond to connect folks with the right bike for the job, with the right accessories and advice to help prevent theft. Whether just starting out, or a seasoned rider, the goal is to meet everyone where they're at by providing a positive and catered experience, with as much care and knowledge as possible. He loves his dog and bearded Dragon, and takes them on cycling adventures of their own around Brooklyn, including to the beach. Riding is for everyone! Scaly and furry friends included.
Santos
Santos has been with Bicycle Roots since 2021. He's a sales associate, and is happy to share knowledge and experience to help better educate folks. Originally hailing from NYC, Santos is a lifer!
Steven J.
Steven J. was the Bicycle Roots shop rabbit up until his passing on Feb. 14th, 2020. As shop rabbit, he took his job very seriously. He was very productive at shredding cardboard, and didn't mind being paid in kale(he loved the green!).
